[Newt just kind of surrenders to his fate after a few attempts of reaching out for his earpiece on the table (which, man, he's a few inches too far from being able to hook his foot on the table leg, cool, cool, his luck is terrible); he tries to pull his hand through the cuffs until the biting into his wrists hurts too much, then slumps tiredly into the wall, breathing like he's ran a marathon.
Man, his body hurts. That's a good sign, way better than everything not hurting, but it still sucks. Judging by the way the room shakes, he has a feeling him being in decent health isn't gonna matter if he's buried in big piles of concrete and rebar.]
C'mon, Newt... C'mon, think, think... think...
[But it looks like he doesn't have to think too long. Between panting and trying to reach the table again, he hears... his name? He's pretty sure he heard his name. Leaning as far as he can with his hands bound to the piping, he calls out:]
Finn?! Hey! In here! Finn, is that you?!
[He laugh-coughs, forcing himself to stand as far as the pipe will let him, looking toward the door hopefully. Everything's blurry, because the dude left his glasses on the table too, but he absolutely recognizes the two figures that appear in the doorway. Laughing more excitedly, he looks exhausted but so very relieved]
Jim! Finn! Heeeey, dudes, how're you. S'great to see you! [Standing bowed like this hurts his stomach, so he just slides back down the wall. His hair sticks to a sweat forehead, and he looks kind of sickly, but he doesn't look all that harmed, other than the bandaids scattered on his hands.] How's it going? You're both looking good.
[Newton, you can only see their blurry figures right now.]
[ He hears Newt answering back and he immediately takes off towards the sound of his voice. Aside from the one guard who had some score to settle with Newt (that was apparently more important than the whole building crumbling down on them), everyone else seems to have fled the floor, so it only takes them a couple of seconds to make it to where Newt is.
There's a relieved sigh and a wide grin as soon as he realizes that Newt's fine. A little banged up, but nothing that he won't get over. ]
Well, I always look good, so.
[ He heads over to Newt, giving him a once-over, eyes landing on the cuffs. ]
He's cuffed to a pipe, [ He says to Finn, since he can't really see it right now. ] Figures you'd be into some kinky shit. Come on— can you hold your hands as wide apart as you can for me? I'll shoot them off of you.
[ Also please hurry, before the room collapses or something. ]
[ Finn hustles inside after Jim, a big smile on his face even though he's pretty sure they don't look particularly great right now. James maybe.
But the smile falls when he hears about the cuffs. There had been some sort of clinking noise... Then the frown is quickly replaced by a slightly panicked look. ]
There's... no keys? I'm guessing?
[ He's not arguing Jim's methods. He's just concerned. And also can't see and is distressed that there might be a very obvious key somewhere in his line of sight. There's no time to go on a scavenger hunt or anything but--
Y'know what? Maybe it's a better plan to keep Newt distracted. ]
Pass me those glasses. I'm great, I'm fine. Never been better.
[Which kind of betrays the pale look on his face, which is currently lined with some pained tension, but it's not like Finn can see that. Nor does he see the way Newt suddenly twists in his cuffs and leans away from Finn when he almost bumps into him — Wait, what? Waitaminute, why isn't Finn seeing that, actually? Newton glances in worry at the Finn-shaped blob, frowning, but still doing as he's told; he pulls his reddened, achy wrists as far apart as they'll go — which isn't very far on a pair of standard handcuffs.
Please don't shoot him, Jimbo.]
Why'd you have to tell him that? What's wrong with your vision?
And what're you doing here, Jim? You're shot, dude!
[ Priorities, Newt! While those cuffs are on, it's the only thing Jim's worrying about, and it's easier to focus like that. Just solving one problem at a time.
Anyway, as for all those questions? They're getting effectively ignored for the time being. He'll probably see soon enough what's wrong with Finn's eyes in any case, so he won't go into that when he needs Newt to stay really still and as calm as he can manage right now.
Luckily Jim isn't blind, and despite his gunshot wound, he can still aim his phaser just fine. Highest setting will turn the cuffs pretty hot, but it also means they break apart in a couple of seconds, at which point Newt will just have to give a tug to free himself.
Only then does he grab Newt's glasses, as well as his earpiece, handing them both to Newt. ] Here. Now let's get out of here.
[ Finn, sweet as he is, actually turns his head in the direction he thinks Newton is indicating as if he can fetch the glasses himself before he realizes it's not going to work like that. His head whips back when the shot goes off, but no one seems to be yelling in pain so it probably went well.
Plus, yeah, he's also going to ignore Newton's questions. Or, well, the first two. ]
He's all right for now. I'm looking after him. [ Ha. Haha. There are so many layers to those statements. Anyway, he starts to move to the door again. Time to go! ]
The stairwell is clear. Hermann's already outside, if you were wondering.
[Newton flinches hard at the phaser firing a blast, but when he opens one eye a sliver, he can see the chain fall away with just a tug of his hands. Well, he's got handcuff jewelry for now! He's not about to complain; instead he grins as he sways up to his feet, and regardless of how much like shit he feels, he happily leans over to cheer and give Jim a big dumb kiss on the side of the face.]
My herooooo! [Taking the glasses in his hands and slipping them back on, he winces at the side of the dried blood on Jim's jacket.] ... Yeesh. You look terrible. In a hot way, of course, but. Let's get you lying down, huh? I think we could all use a nap, honestly.
[Turning to follow Finn, he smiles weakly.]
Thanks, though. Seriously. I knew Hermann was in good hands with you two.
By the way — [He grabs Finn's shoulder, turning him back toward him slightly as he holds up a closed fist.] How many fingers am I holding up, Finnicus?
[ At least he's not stuck to the pipe anymore, and he didn't even have to go find an axe, would you look at that? Despite looking like shit, Newt seems to be standing upright so far, and bearing no lethal injury either. It'll make leaving the building that much easier, he hopes. ]
I think we could all use getting the hell out of here if we don't want to get crushed to death.
[ There doesn't seem to be much else for them to take from this room, so he gives Newt a nudge towards the room, then Finn. Come on, come on, no time to stand around chatting. ]
He's blind right now. [ Just in case the fact that Finn's eyes are completely whited out doesn't give that away. ] Little mishap with the Ti'shaaz a while back. He can make his way around, though, he's got this special ability. It's how we found you.
[ Finn pauses and squints in the direction he thinks Newton's hand is in, concentrating as if the Force might give him the answer and he doesn't have to worry anyone else. ] ... Threeeee? [ Wow, that sure did sound confident.
Anyway, he's stopped by Jim pushing on him and explaining what actually happened. So much his number guessing! ]
It's those things in my blood you found. They're sort of... talking to me more often? That sounds horrible now that I'm saying it.
[ Whatever, he's making his way back to the stairwell now. ]
Again, dude, why are you in here if you can't see...
[Maybe Newt has no room to talk, because the blind guy and the shot guy have successfully retrieved him from what could have been his doom (hopefully this building stays upright, huh?!) — but still!
...
He does, however, smile despite himself, relieved and maybe a little proud.]
But, uh. I'm proud of you, Finn. I mean, look at the good you're doing with those powers, huh?
[They get to the stairwell, and Newton does pretty good through a portion of those steps, Finn at his side, Kirk behind him. The pain starts ramping somewhere in the middle of their brisk escape before he feels his vision sharply black-out for a moment, and he slips on a step and stumbles shoulder-first into the nearest wall with a pained cry.]
Agh... shit, shit, ah fuck... [His bruised ribs are screaming in protest now, the thud-thud of pain finally washing over what safety the adrenaline provided. But Finn and Kirk are being all badass and tough, and Newt's not about to be the loser who can't handle it.] Sorry guys, I'm good, just keep going, I'm good-
[ Yes guys, this is definitely the time to stand around pointing out why them being here is such a bad idea! This whole damn mission is a bad idea, in case either of you haven't noticed, and Newt should know enough about both of them to know they'd never just stay behind or sit around while people are in danger here. Neither of them are dying from their injuries or handicaps, and they're evidently capable enough of helping, so. ]
We can all stroke each other's egos another time, don't you think?
[ His voice strains, pain flaring briefly, but he powers through. The adrenaline is doing wonders for him and his injury right now. Which is more than can be said for Newt's state, clearly. ]
Hey, hey— [ Jim rushes to Newt's side, taking hold of his arm, trying to help him keep moving. ] Oh no, we're not going anywhere without you. Finn, help me out here, we need to help him walk.
[ Yeah, yeah, Newt, he knows where you're going with that. ]
I was kind of thinking it was a more neutral way to use them--
[ But he stops when Jim speaks up, a lot more worried about the pain in his voice than what he actually says. Dammit, really should have left him outside somehow. For all the complaining was kind of fun, it was no less serious and true.
Then everything stops when Newton does. Finn's quick to get on his opposite side, getting an arm around his upper back and trying to loop Newt's arm over his shoulders. But it's kind of tough since he doesn't know where the injury is. ]
Where are you hurt? What's wrong?
[ Don't worry, Jim. He's talking and moving all at the same time. Though, even though he's already moving them forward, progress is a good bit slower now. ]
... I don't think the one who's shot should be helping someone walk...
[He says it through gritted teeth, and there's no heat or fight behind it, because he's pretty sure Kirk wouldn't listen to him anyway if he's this far into a rescue operation. When Finn pulls Newt's arm over his shoulder his body stiffens suddenly, a small cry of pain slipping out before he bites his lip to shut himself up.]
Um. Uh. Just — educated guess based on symptoms, but — internal contusions from blunt abdominal trauma, maybe some bruised ribs; I got jumped and kicked around by some magical asshole at the speakeasy. [Newt doesn't want them to slow down (or rather, he doesn't want him to slow them down), so he tries to move his legs faster, breath hitching with each heavy step that going down a staircase unfortunately calls for. Mentioning the speakeasy, however, makes his expression tighten, eyes sharpening into a betrayed glower.] That asshole — fucking left me there...! When I see Rosinante again, I'm gonna punch him right in the dick...! Just — abandoned me to get beat to death while he got out through the back.
[He can't wait to give him a piece of his mind. Oh, he's gonna.
Even if the guy is like 100 feet tall and can probably pinch Newt's head off.]
We can discuss that when we're not about to get buried alive under rubble, if you don't mind —
[ Besides, aside from the pain and struggling, Jim's doing fine. He's definitely not falling over in pain or passing out, so he almost feels like he's doing better than Newt. Maybe it's just his pain tolerance, who knows.
Focused mainly on going down the stairs, Jim's attention still snaps back to Newt when he says that name. ]
Rosinante did this? [ He frowns. ] Why?
[ Could be a myriad of reasons. It's not even like Jim knows him that well, when they only had the one talk. He'd seemed more decent than this, but then they do say first impressions can be deceiving. ]
[ Finn feels all that twinging and wincing, but as long as he's not rubbing broken bones together (probably not) he's going to mostly ignore it. Not being squished is higher priority right now. Sorry, Newt. ]
We're moving, we're moving. [ Told to Jim, right when he's about to jump right back into their prior argument. Only. Finn's immediately distracted. ]
He- Wait, what!?
[ That doesn't line up with the guy Finn knows. They held each others backs a couple of times in the past. Surely the situation at the speakeasy was nothing he couldn't handle...
Finn has the unfortunate feeling that... perhaps this was the fulfillment of his goal. Which.
Fuck.
Okay. Now Finn's actually pissed. And he knows it comes out in how hard his voice is but to hell with that. ] He'll answer for it back at the station. [ Gotta focus on now. ]
[Newt grips their arms back, mindful of Kirk’s injury; last thing he wants is to make that any worse. But at Jim’s discontented reply, he shakes his head, disbelief and uncertainty warring even hours after the speakeasy attack.]
One of those ti’shaaz assholes just kept beating me, felt like — getting hit with a wrecking ball, over and over; Rosinante looked right at me and just… bolted. Kept calling to him for help over the earpiece, but —
[Newt’s mouth snaps shut, and he quiets at the memory. He’s pissed, yeah, but he’s also hurt; is he that easy to abandon? Squeezing Finn’s arm, he says:]
Don’t worry about it. Lets just — get out of here alive.
[ At least one of them is mindful of the injury, because it sure looks like Jim doesn't give a crap about it right now. He'll make it (somehow), and they all either die here or get back to the station, where he knows he'll be able to get the best care possible that he can't just now.
He says nothing to Newt's short rant. He's pissed and Jim can't blame him, but he's also glad that Newt doesn't cling to it, at least not at the moment. It's not the kind of thing they should be worrying about at the moment. ]
Right. Yeah, we definitely need to get you out of here.
[ And then go back in to get more people out, but better that Jim doesn't tell Newt about that. ]
[ Yeah, no, Finn's gonna worry about it. A guy he previously trusted with his life suddenly appears to be untrustworthy after all. The problem is, given their situation on these missions, Finn knew this sort of thing was going to happen eventually. Yet it still manages to hit him hard. Makes him wonder who he can really trust.
He really hates wondering that. ]
Yeah, Hermann's probably bored of pretending he's not worried by now.
[ Not that he knows Hermann all that well, but Newton does and it seems like an uplifting-ish thing to say. Also gets them off the topic of betrayal, so there's that. ]
Did you see anyone else before we showed up? Any civilians or people from the station?
[ Finn's already shouldering open the ground level's stairwell door. Progress! And, hey, maybe he can convince Newton to distract Jim while Finn comes back in looking for more people. An unlikely thought. ]
[He laughs weakly, and then makes a bigger effort to carry his weight on his own; he doesn't want them expending anymore energy than necessary, not when it's a life or death kind of situation.]
Yeah, yeah. I'm sure he'll be thrilled to hear me barreling toward him. Just don't tell him what I said, okay? I'm seriously gonna be fine, and I don't need him lecturing me. [AKA 'Worrying about him'; this is their friend language, it is what it is. He huffs breathlessly:] I can walk; I'm good, I'm okay, it's fine.
Alina and Daisy were two people I ran into, earlier. But if I had to bet money on people who can handle themselves and get out on their own, I'd probably wage money on those two. Most people are higher up on the floors than me; got here kinda late, sorry.
[ Jim absolutely disagrees with not telling Hermann about it, but it's not his place, so he'll do what Newt wants him to. For now anyway, kinda like Newt's inexplicable migraines, as long as it doesn't become a bigger problem Jim will let it be. ]
That's fine. I figured that most people would be trapped in the floors above anyway.
[ Still, good to know. Newt probably would've seen others if there was anyone near to where he was, so it's a good starting point for when they go back up.
Yeah Finn, you can forget about trying to ditch him along with Newt, it's not gonna happen. ]
Come on, we're almost there.
[ They've made it down a number of floors already, moving faster than probably advisable for a blind guy, a guy who's been shot and another beaten up. ]
Well, you should probably be the one to tell him, anyway.
[ Honestly, though? All bets are off once they're back on the station. People need to know about this whole thing. They're supposed to be a team, dammit. This is how people die. But whatever, he'll rant about that later.
Besides all that, Finn's pretty sure Hermann's smart enough to figure out that Newton's pretty seriously injured. So that little omission won't last long, at least. ]
Here- No, wait, that's a wall. Here.
[ Finn tugs them to the side, around a corner and through a doorway. As far as he knows, it's the closest way towards an exit. ]
You guys aren't gonna go all the way back up there, are you? You're gonna get yourselves into trouble! Then people are gonna go find you. It's an endless cycle of people dragging other people out!
[Not that he's gonna stop them. He knows what it's like to ignore other people's advice or orders, okay.
... Besides, he's super tired. He just. Wants to rest. Even though he would love nothing more than to keep on keepin' on and go drag people out of buildings, he thinks he may literally just pass out the moment he's sat down somewhere.]
Don't you— [ with a bit more effort there ] —worry about what we're going to do next. You should focus on yourself right now.
[ But yes, they're obviously going back in. For as long as they can manage to stay upright, they're going to keep trying to help and rescue people, no point in even trying to talk them out of it. Anyway, they're almost reaching the end of the stairs, so Newt's going to have the opportunity to pass out sooner rather than later. ]
Yeah, don't worry, it's going to be fine. I'm using the Force and everything, see? It's fine.
James is hurt, though.
[ Just gonna wiggle that on in there, thanks.
Anyway, finally at the bottom of the stairs, Finn starts tugging the other two in the general direction that they entered the building from. It's the last place he saw Hermann. ]
Figures...! Big Damn Hero complexes, I swear to god. You two are such Jaeger pilots.
[As they get through the outside door, Newton pulls himself free from the two of them, then turns and faces them as they stand in tandem.]
I'll find Hermann; I've got it from here, okay? Slow but steady'll do it. [He reaches out, puts a hand on their necks and pulls them a little closer, so he can speak more intimately over the sounds of the quaking and confusion in the streets. Looking between them, he manages to drum up a little determination between the bouts of exhaustion.] Listen — I'm not gonna be able to stop you guys, so you do what you've gotta! I'll make my way, but you two just make sure you get back to the ship in one piece, okay?

[ Finn's already shouldering open the ground level's stairwell door. Progress! And, hey, maybe he can convince Newton to distract Jim while Finn comes back in looking for more people. An unlikely thought. ]

Let's take him to Hermann. He'll look after him.

James is hurt, though.
[ Just gonna wiggle that on in there, thanks.
Anyway, finally at the bottom of the stairs, Finn starts tugging the other two in the general direction that they entered the building from. It's the last place he saw Hermann. ]
Do you know if he stayed there? If he moved?
