[ Clearly Finn isn't a quick thinker under pressure, because that sure as hell isn't less alarming than the truth.
Well, okay, it's maybe a little less alarming than the truth, but not not alarming. Jim's eyes widen, and he lets out a— ] What? [ —that gets quickly swallowed up by Finn's panicked words that follow.
And you know what, that whole nervous flailing speech is doing absolutely nothing to put his worries to rest. He heaves out a sigh, and before Finn can keep floundering, he asks abruptly. ]
[ Certainly not a quick thinker when it comes to talking, that's for sure. And he even thinks he might have lowered the temperature a little, which is worse. But he's no longer disillusioned once Jim asks his question. ]
Ah- Yeah. Yeah, sure.
[ If he was a little more on his toes and not still recuperating from blood loss, he would probably warn him about the, uh... blood on the walls. Not his. So, there's that. Vanessa had gone on a little artistic spree, citing that the symbols would ward off evil or something like that. After everything, Finn just went with it.
Making an excellent impression on his crush, no doubt.
Anyway, Finn rubs at his tired eyes and closes the door behind them. ]
Sorry. A lot's been going on. I didn't want to worry anyone... And it's a weird story... Can I get you anything?
[ You see Finn, this is the kind of thing you just don't let a guy see after you mention being mugged or some guy attacking you out of nowhere or—
Just, whatever happened. Jim can't even begin to imagine how it ended up with all the blood-drawn symbols on the walls, but he is kind of assuming that it's absolutely related. Especially with all the bandages and who knows what other injuries Finn has on him.
He's totally going to ignore that offer and just turn back to Finn with a genuinely concerned look on his face. ]
[ So much for not worrying anyone. At this point, he'll have to just tell James the truth, no matter how bizarre it may be. Though, the part that really hangs Finn up is potentially getting someone else in trouble. ]
Sorry. Just- [ Gently, he takes Jim's arm and leads them to a couch. Both because this is a whole story and because standing isn't the best thing in the world for Finn right now. Vertigo is annoying at best, and it might be a little obvious by how he rubs at his temple before he sits. ]
Vanessa did those. She said they'd ward away evil or- or something like that. Makes her feel safer. [ And, hey, maybe it works. Who knows?
Right, so... rubbing at his eyes again before looking at Jim properly. ]
I was attacked by someone, but it wasn't his fault. Apparently, he-... [ His hand dances around again, holding his breath, trying and failing to figure out a better way to say this. ] He needs to... drink blood to live. And he'd been starving himself for awhile, I think... He even asked me first, but he wasn't in his right mind and-
[ Yeah, just... gesturing at his chest. ]
A sword was involved. I'm not hurt badly. Mostly just blood loss... I know it sounds crazy.
[ Jim hasn't met Vanessa, so despite her kindly offering Finn a place to stay and him hearing only good (or at least not-bad) things from Finn about her, this kind of makes him a little concerned. Who in their right minds goes around covering walls with symbols written in blood? ]
This isn't your blood, is it?
[ Should've started with that, Finn. Because you know, blood loss, and then there are these symbols... just saying. ]
You met a vampire. There's a vampire here.
[ Vampires are real. Like, sure, with all the shit he's seen so far, of course they'd be real, go figure. It's just so wild every time Jim learns of yet another new thing. ]
That's because it is crazy, Finn. Just— blood loss? Did you go see a doctor? Disinfect your wounds, at least? Have you had anything to eat or drink yet?
[ He's taking off his jacket and pulling up his sleeves, guess Finn's just gotten himself a nurse now. ]
No, no, it's not mine. [ It's hers. ] And there's two, actually. [ That he knows of. Which is presumably okay, because he sure doesn't appear to be worried about it.
All of the questions and the jacket coming off, though? That, he's a little worried about. His eyes stay on Jim's arms while the sleeves get pulled up- Finn, pay attention. ]
Ah- It- No, I didn't go anywhere. We disinfected them as best we could, though.
[ What was he supposed to tell a doctor? Honestly? But at this, he rubs a hand over the bandages across his chest, only just now realizing that it's been on full display this entire time. Fantastic. At least, it doesn't look like anything's bled through (too badly). ]
I've been sleeping a lot, so... not really a lot of time to eat. Vanessa mostly has deserts and things...
[ A shrug. He's so super fine. ]
I'm okay, really. I was going to call you at first, but I didn't want to worry you about it.
[ Two vampires. Well, okay then, that's great. Especially if they go around starving themselves to the point of potentially causing this kind of harm to someone else.
But Jim's not going to touch on that point, nor is he going to ask who they are. But that doesn't mean he's not going to be concerned about other people's safety, and in this particular case, Finn's safety. ]
When did you get these bandages on? You might need to have them switched. I can help.
[ He moves closer to Finn, so he can have a closer look at the bandages, see if they're loose or coming off anywhere, or if there's any blood staining them. ]
[ So, yeah, probably due a change. Even though he's mostly been sleeping, he's moved around for them to be a little loose on the edges, and there is one dark stain, small and faint, but proof of old blood.
He just hopes he's not obviously blushing right now, though. This is serious, but James being so close with such talk while Finn's feeling light-headed is going to be an interesting combination.
Then again, this isn't how Finn would like to look while being shirtless around James for the first time. ]
[ Judging by the state of them, they're definitely due for a change. And since Finn doesn't oppose (not that it looks like he's in good condition to), he nods, gesturing for Finn to lead the way. ]
Okay. You've got a room? Let's set things up there. Just tell me where I can grab some clean bandages, a bowl of water and a cloth or towel I can get dirty.
[ And yes this is serious Finn, so get your priorities straight!! ]
[ Sounds like Jim does want to, then. Finn's not sure if he should be happy or nervous... or professional. Probably that last one. Definitely the last one.
Right, he's just going to start by standing up. It's a little wobbly and slow and paused due to him shutting his eyes and needing a second, but he does stand. ]
My room's this way. The bathroom across the hall has everything, I think. Might have to check the kitchen for a bowl if that wasn't left last night. I can't remember.
[ And he tended to himself last night, too, but it was mostly a blur. Either way, he begins to move, intending to show Jim around a little. The place is nice but not overly large, so there isn't much to see. Plus, he's only doing the tour from this couch all the way to his plush, four-poster, beloved bed. ]
[ Yeah, this is totally professional. Call him Nurse Kirk if that helps. (It won't help, Jim would never let it go.)
He reaches out for Finn when he wobbles a bit, then keeps one hand on his arm and another tucked around his midsection, offering some support as they make it across the living area and towards his room. He appreciates being shown around but doesn't waste time in getting Finn to sit down on his bed, making sure he's alright before he worries about fetching all the things they'll need. ]
Alright, I'll go grab everything, you just sit still.
[ Jim having his hands on him helps about as much as calling him 'Nurse Kirk' might. But when Jim sits him down, Finn nods and watches him leave...
Then groans, covers his eyes, falls back on the bed, and immediately regrets it. The whole room seems to tip on an axis, never mind the burning strike of pain across his chest. ]
Stupid... Stupid...
[ He grumbles until he's sitting up again and sighs. Great job not worrying James, way to go. And great job not embarrassing himself either. Showing off his newest open wound probably won't win any points with him, too, not that Finn should be thinking about any of that right now. But it's either think about that or the reality of his current situation...
It is nice that James cares so much, though, even if Finn does feel bad. Anyway, he stays there and waits for Jim's return, belatedly remembering to remove his shirt while he's at it. ]
[ For what it's worth, Finn manages to cover that up more or less alright, because Jim doesn't immediately notice anything wrong. He drags a chair closer to the bed with a foot, so he can set the bowl down there, then sits next to Finn and reaches out to help him with his shirt, then he starts undoing the bandages.
That's when he notices a fresh stain of blood on the white fabric, and frowns. ]
You're bleeding again.
[ It's not serious, but Jim is holding the wet cloth in one hand while uncovering the injury, ready to press against it if need be. ]
[ The uncomfortable pull on his chest while they get the shirt off is enough to almost make him not think too much about Jim helping. Almost. But then he really stops thinking about it when he points out the blood.
He glances down and confirms it for himself with another groan. Dammit. ]
Sorry.
[ Instead of dwelling on it, he busies himself with awkwardly helping Jim get the bandages off, wincing a little as they're finally peeled away from the wound itself.
It's not-... Well, it could be a lot worse. No signs of infection, very little signs of healing, but the cut itself is clean and shallow. Long, goes across the upper part of his ribs and over his chest, but all in one straight line. It is still bleeding, though, in a few areas. One of them is new, bleeding freely but not remotely as bad as it had been.
It's okay, [ He mutters, pausing on removing the bandages to look up at Finn, a hand resting on his chest lightly. ] It's not your fault, Finn.
[ Not unless he willingly threw himself at that vampire fully knowing what would happen, but he hopes he's not wrong in thinking Finn's not that stupid.
Anyway, once the bandages come off completely, Jim is too worried about what he sees to care about anything else, though he manages to keep himself surprisingly calm. ]
I can stop the bleeding, but we should put something on the injury before covering it up. Do you have some cream or salve for it?
[ He's... really regretting not having borrowed Bones's medkit for this, but it's not like he knew what he was coming here for. ]
I was expecting something more like bite marks, not... this. How did he do this cut?
[ He stops breathing a little when James pauses everything, and he doesn't really start again until asked a question. ]
Ah- There's... some here.
[ On the side table. He reaches out slowly and grabs a jar of salve, trying to ignore the concern that's suddenly descended between them. He bites his lip but huffs a laugh. ]
No, he, uh- He had a sword. I think a bite would have been less confusing, actually.
[ There are a few bruises here and there, on his torso and arms, signs of struggle. They're almost faint, though, but that's mostly just due to his dark skin and time passing.
The jar rotates in his hand while he fiddles with it. ]
I know it looks pretty bad, but- It's just kind of tender now, really. I'm all right.
[ He takes the salve, shooting Finn a quiet stare. ]
Yeah, and with all the blood loss, I'm sure you can't even remember all of it that clearly.
[ Not that it's meant as a jab or anything, but it does come across a little as that. Jim follows it with a quiet 'sorry', because he knows it's not Finn's fault, it's not like he asked to be attacked like this.
He dampens the cloth in the water first, then uses it to gently wipe around the wound, clearing most of the blood from around the cut, then very gently dabbing over it. Once he's pleased with it, he sets the cloth aside and starts spreading some of the salve over the injury, not too much but just enough to cover the wound.
He glances up to Finn every once in a while just to make sure he's not hurting him, and wipes his hands on the cloth once he's done with the salve. ]
[ The jab does make him feel bad, but only because it's a very true callout. All he remembers is that he passed, woke up sometime later, repeat a few times--
James is saying nothing that's not true.
Between that and the pain of having the wound cleaned, he's not even thinking anymore about their close proximity. Though, he does his best not to show the pain, not so much as a hiss or wince, only one little flinch when the salve starts to be spread.
But it's over quickly. ]
It's okay.
[ It does hurt, yeah, but not badly and already fading. Not much that can be done about that... ]
Thanks.
... And you don't have to apologize. I shouldn't make light of it, I guess.
[ It doesn't look bad, and he's pretty sure he'd know if Finn were in intolerable pain. As it is, he can guess it's uncomfortable and there's some kind of dull ache, it'll probably mean Finn will have to be careful when he lies down or moves much, but it doesn't look bad. He'll definitely ask Bones how he can help heal it faster, though, if there are even tools for that here.
For now, he'll have to be content with this. With a sigh and a nod, he takes the bandages, starting with a folded piece of clean cloth to place over the injury and protect it from chafing, then beginning to wrap the strips carefully around Finn's torso. ]
It's fine. You weren't making light of it, I guess I just worried.
[ Part of him can't help but feel bad for all the times he's been in Finn's place, with Bones worrying over him instead. He sighs quietly, his arms winding in what's almost an awkward hug to get the strips of fabric tight enough around him that they won't fall off. ]
Besides, I know it wasn't your fault. Just wish you'd let me know sooner that it happened.
[ Finn stays quiet while Jim works, holding fabric here and there to help a little, features mostly blank. The moment reminds him of the lack of space between them, but it doesn't make him blush or anything like it had before. There's something... accepting now about how tender this is, how much James seems to care, and how genuinely worried Finn's made him.
He finds himself just watching him while he works, perhaps staring but in a warm and contemplative way. And eventually, after Jim's words has time to hang between them-... ]
[ It's easy to finish patching Finn up, with how still he is and the help he provides with keeping the bandages in place. Once he's done, he ties it into place, carefully tucking the ends out of the way, then resting his hands over the fabric, looking up to meet Finn's eyes.
He is suddenly overwhelmed by the desire to kiss him out of nowhere, and he leans in maybe an inch or so as if he's about to do it, only to stop himself with a stutter of his heartbeat. Would it be welcome? He's not so sure. Finn does seem to like him, but he could be getting too ahead of himself and doing this might just ruin the beginning of a good friendship.
So instead he presses his lips in and leans back, gathering the supplies he didn't use to set them aside on Finn's nightstand. ]
I'll go get you something to eat and drink, you need it. Try to sit back and get comfortable, I'll be right back.
[ He-... Finn's suddenly unsure what's happening. Only that his breath has left him and his heart's stopped.
Had that just-... It seemed like-... An image comes to mind, a fantasy of him reaching out to stop James, to bring him closer, to kiss him- But he doesn't. Because that couldn't have just happened. It had but-... ]
Okay.
[ The answer might come a few seconds later than normal, but Finn doesn't really notice or care. He just watches, and will be until James leaves the room. Then he'll pull himself together and follow instructions. Because that couldn't have just happened. ]
[ Yeah, sure. That couldn't have just happened. Better that Finn thinks that than he asks Jim what was that about, because he's not sure he'd know what to tell him.
Anyway, he easily distracts himself by focusing on preparing Finn something to eat, mostly just bread and stuff to add on top of it, some fruit and snacks, and a glass of water that he's absolutely going to need. He brings it all back to Finn's room, setting it down on what little room is still left on his nightstand, then he gathers all the supplies so he can go put them away while Finn eats. ]
[ There is absolutely no way that Finn's going to ask about that moment. Any answer to that question scares him a little too much right now. All he offers is a quiet 'thank you' about the food.
So he's sitting on the bed, leaning back on the headboard, eating a piece of fruit and silently watching Jim gather his things and move around. Which is probably more awkward than just flat out asking, surely. But he can't ask. He won't. He's not.
[ It's a little less awkward for Jim, mostly because he's keeping himself busy with tidying everything up. Once he's done, though, he has nothing else to do, so he goes back to Finn's bed and sits on the edge of the mattress, shaking his head at the offer. ]
It's fine. I ate before coming over.
[ And Finn absolutely needs it more than he does. ]
