TL;DR CRAU BACKGROUND:
»ARRIVAL: Finn arrived in Vaikuntha through a nebula in the sky called the Dream Width. Finding himself alone, he learned that newcomers were referred to as the Heroes of Light and directed to choose Jobs, roles that gave characters abilities. He took a few non-magical Jobs, joined the police force, and bought a home in a quiet village beside a river that was big enough to accommodate his friends if they showed up.

A few months after his arrival, the Empire (a country in Vaikuntha that had been closed to outsiders for decades) suddenly reopened their borders and hosted a festival, inviting the Heroes to attend a dinner with the Empress. At the dinner, the Empress, Ramaa, revealed that she called them there for a serious purpose. Her people had gotten news that a master Summoner was preparing to summon Bahamut, an Eidolon whose only purpose was to destroy worlds and life. She asked for their aid and warned that they only had a few months until Bahamut would inevitably be summoned.

To learn more about the Eidolons (summoned beings), Finn picked up the Summoner Job and searched out the oldest and wisest Eidolons to add to his team.

»THE ENTITY: After hitting multiple dead ends and the Heroes getting desperate, Finn proposed that they create a mass evacuation procedure instead. He laid out a plan that sent him and whoever would go along on an expedition back through the Dream Width to find an evacuation route safe enough to get the people off of the planet before the summoning. Many Heroes agreed and joined Finn on the expedition.

After successfully entering back through the Dream Width and traveling through the wormhole for three days, the group encountered an entity known as the Cloud of Darkness. Finn, as the leader, stepped forward to ask that they pass and warned the entity about the danger Bahamut posed to life. Instead of helping, the entity used a strange power to torture Finn in front of the others and told them that it didn't care what happened to any of them. Finn's pain was spread to the other Heroes involved and they all blacked out. When they woke, everyone was back on Vaikuntha with a new Job called Calamity Knight that seemed to be powerful but very dark and violent. Finn was the only one who didn't have the Job removed but also kept it in secret.

Unbeknownst to Finn at the time, the Calamity Knight Job was powered by the Calamity, a darkness that had destroyed worlds before. Those who used the Job became infected with the Calamity, becoming paranoid and easily angered while their body began to break down from the overuse of so much power.

»BAHAMUT: Finally, the day of the summoning came, and the Heroes went back to the Empire to meet with the Empress again. She then revealed that she was the reincarnation of Kalki, Goddess of Darkness, and had been the master Summoner all along. Not wasting time, Finn shot her, but she was strong enough to deflect the shot that hit and killed one of his friends. The Empress then summoned Bahamut which destroyed the city. During a chaotic escape, the Heroes survived but landed on the back of the giant Eidolon. Finn then finally used Calamity Knight for the first time, revealing himself to be the strongest Hero while using the Job, but none of them was any match for the Eidolon.

Bahamut then destroyed Vaikuntha and reality space/time, preparing to travel through the Dream Width to destroy the Heroes homeworlds as well. Before that could happen, a young girl who had mysteriously appeared to each Hero before, suddenly arrived again and managed to rewind time by three days. Only the Heroes kept their memories of the events. Upon their next failure to prevent the apocalypse, time was rewound again and again and again.

Eventually, after getting every minute on the exact right course, a strange woman appeared. She told the Heroes that Bahamut was one of five Legendary Eidolons that could only be defeated with the other four. Though the Heroes already knew this, none of them were experienced enough to summon them. She granted four of the Summoners a crystal and means to summon one of the Legendaries once. Finn was one of the four selected and gained the ability to summon the Legendary Zodiark, the only known Eidolon of Darkness.

With Zodiark and the other Legendaries, the Heroes were able to subdue Bahamut. Finn again used Calamity Knight and was able to stop the Empress with the other Heroes. Finn then attempted to kill her after the battle was done but some of the other Heroes held him back. During the ensuing argument, she escaped. Time finally went back to normal.

»AFTERMATH: Finn became increasingly paranoid and angry, side effects of using the Calamity Knight Job. His friends were starting to ask him to get rid of it, but he refused and became suspicious of them, thinking that they were turning against him.

During this time, a Zabrak man from Finn's home universe arrived. The man, Maul, claimed to have been a Jedi before the Republic fell and was now fighting alone against the Empire. Finn didn't know that the man was actually Darth Maul, a Sith and darkside Force user. Believing him, Finn quickly grew attached and confessed that he had a lightsaber of his own (the Skywalker lightsaber). Maul agreed to teach Finn how to use it.

During their lessons, Maul was particularly ruthless, urging the use of Calamity Knight, and taught Finn about darkside ideals, like killing your enemies while they were helpless. Using the excuse that Maul was a Jedi and couldn't be wrong, Finn bought into the ideology simply because he wanted to. Eventually, Maul considered Finn to be his apprentice, and Finn was incredibly honored by the title.

»CRYSTALLIS: The Heroes received word that the Empress managed to flee through the Dream Width and reemerged on a planet called Crystallis. With directions on how to get directly to Crystallis and avoid the Cloud of Darkness, the Heroes left Vaikuntha to hunt her down before she could summon Bahamut again. Upon arrival in Crystallis, none of the locals believed who they are, what they're mission was or any of their stories. Finn then lead a group to meet with the Regent of the capital city, but the Regent entered the meeting angry and spiteful. Finn got into an argument with him and threatened him, effectively losing the Regent's support. He then left the politics to the other Heroes, realizing he was no help.

Eventually, they learned of a place called the Soul Divider, which is apparently in the center of the planet, and had reason to believe that the Empress was there. The Heroes traveled to the Soul Divider and encountered the Empress again. She was distraught as she revealed to the party that she actually wasn't the reincarnation of the Goddess and had been lied to. Even so, she attacked them.

After a battle that she lost, Finn again tried to finish her off, but someone else arrived. Balahaka, one of the Empress' right-hand men in running the Empire back on Vaikuntha, randomly appeared and revealed that he knew strange details about each of their homeworlds, even calling Finn "Darth." He then revealed that he was basically pulling the strings and working for the Cloud of Darkness the entire time, acknowledging that the Empress and Bahamut only existed to buy him time. The real goal was to implant multiple Soul Dividers in each of their homeworlds, telling them that the Soul Divider was actually a technology designed to absorb life's energy and create more of the Calamity, effectively destroying everything.

Finn tried to attack Balahaka, but the other man suddenly gained control over his body and abilities. Balahaka told the Heroes that the Calamity Knights only existed to serve the Calamity, whether they want to or not. He then took Finn and the other two Calamity Knights who had remained secret until now (one of them being Maul) and dispersed them to other worlds to protect the Soul Dividers from the Heroes.

»A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY: When Maul and Finn arrived back in their home galaxy directly after the events of The Last Jedi, they killed the Supreme Leader of the First Order, Kylo Ren, and took over the organization as the New Empire, Maul himself becoming Emperor. Dathomir, Maul's home planet, became the Imperial Seat in the galaxy and home to their Soul Divider.

Balahaka had given all control of Finn over to Maul, who had decided that Finn had more or less completed his training and was renamed to Darth Martis. Finn was then commanded to lead a fleet of Star Destroyers, deadly Imperial capital ships, and destroy the Resistance that stood against the First Order as well as any planets remaining that supported them. Having no choice, he was forced to obey. However, Finn continued testing the limits of their control over him, realizing that while he had to obey their orders, he could do other things in the meantime.

Shortly after destroying the Resistance, Finn got word that they had captured the pilot Poe Dameron, one of his oldest friends long before arriving in Vaikuntha. Before Maul could learn of Poe's sudden appearance, Finn freed him and gave him crucial information to take to the other Heroes who would have been arriving soon. After much arguing, Poe finally left.

Not long after, Poe and the Heroes managed to destroy the Soul Divider by infiltrating the Empire. Maul and Finn arrived too late to stop them but quickly went on the attack. Maul subsequently fell in battle, leaving Finn to fight against them alone, still having to follow his orders. However, his friends wouldn't attack him, Poe even stepping forward unarmed. Put under the difficult conflict, Finn finally broke free of the Calamity and the control it had over him. He took Maul's Darksaber and promised Poe that he'd return to fix their galaxy after he and the other Heroes finished off the Cloud of Darkness.

He went back to Vaikuntha with the Heroes, no longer having the same strength from before. Even so, they still managed to defeat the last remaining Calamity Knight, Balahaka, and finally the Entity itself. With the Calamity destroyed (for now), the Heroes were able to decide if they wanted to stay on Vaikuntha or go home with the hopes of undoing everything that happened with the presence of the Soul Divider. Keeping his promise, Finn decided to go home-

But woke up on Iris instead.

PERSONALITY:
Canon:
In the First Order, FN-2187 had been a terrible Stormtrooper. He cared about his teammates and always tried to make sure they got through every simulated mission unharmed. Because of his caring nature, he became an outcast amongst his peers and looked down on by his superiors. After the one person he considered his friend, FN-2003, had died on a mission to kill innocent civilians, 2187 decided to flee the First Order. The Order had captured the pilot Poe Dameron, presumably the best pilot in the Resistance, on that very same mission. Since he needed a pilot desperately, 2187 rescued him so that they could both escape.

After learning about his designation, Poe gave him the name Finn. A name meant a lot more to a Stormtrooper than to an average person. A name meant that he was a person, independent of the whims of those around him, no longer a serial number in a churning machine. The fact that Poe could give him a name so quickly and easily was not only astonishing but miraculous to 2187- to Finn.

Though he wanted to be as far away from the war as possible, Finn felt a fierce loyalty to his friends, always going back into the heat of battle to help and protect them. After getting seriously injured and waking from the consequential coma, Finn still threw himself into a mission despite initially trying to run away again, all to protect his friends.

While on this mission, he met a man named DJ who advised him to not pick sides, to live free. While the idea was enticing to Finn even after DJ later betrayed them, he couldn't turn his back on what needed to be done. He came to terms that there would be no escape from the fight so long as the First Order continued to harm innocents, finally cementing his resolve to fight for the Resistance.

While it doesn't take too much to become one of Finn's best friends, he only has a handful that are truly close to him. Poe Dameron, being the one who helped him escape, had forged an instant, unbreakable bond with Finn. Though they're so very different, Finn looks up to Poe as someone he should be, as a hero. Rey, a scavenger from Jakku who happens to have the force, was likely his first real friend even though he had met Poe first. Finn and Rey's bond was less instant but perhaps stronger due to their shared experiences of abandonment, lack of childhoods, and wonder at the larger galaxy. Rose Tico was someone he had met later during the botched evacuation from the D'Qar. They ended up bonding over their nerdiness, of all things.

Though Finn's relationship with any three of them are major parts of his life, Rose was definitely someone that turned his perceptions on their heads. For one, Rose saved his life when he didn't want to be saved. He had gone on a suicide run to buy the Resistance time to escape, but she saved him and became gravely injured as a result. Here, she taught him that they shouldn't die for what they hate but live for what they love. This helped Finn let go of his past and some of the anger he had against the First Order, instead focusing more on how he could help his friends and the galaxy. Secondly, Rose gave him his first kiss right before she fell unconscious. Finn still wasn't sure how to take it, shocked at the time and only given some moments to think about it much later. Though he held love for Rose, he decided it wasn't that sort of love and the two remained friends. This gave Finn his first experience with romance and the differences between types of love, almost all of which he'd never been able to experience before.

Finn's hopes for a better life remained even after his resolve in the war was set. Despite not actually knowing life beyond war, Finn continued longing to leave the fight behind him and experience a world of peace. The reasons weren't entirely because of his hatred for the Order or even because of the atrocities they were committing across the galaxy. Finn's loyalty to the Resistance isn't a set thing and never will be. He has no loyalty strictly to any one organization, especially one without question. This was proven clear enough in his decision to start a mutiny.

Instead, Finn's loyalty goes to people. He once lied to the Resistance, telling them that he could perform a crucial part in a mission while his ulterior motive was only to save Rey. Even after coming to the realization that he wasn't going to leave the fight, he still stayed mostly because his friends were staying, because they were loyal to the cause. He wanted to help achieve their dreams and desires, help them get to a point where they would settle down in peace with him. Before that day could come, he decided to stand by their sides through all of the hard times in between.

CRAU:
This good, loyal nature transferred over into Vaikuntha, his immediate concerns being healing abilities and having a home in case his friends ever arrived. He was obsessed with getting back to them, eager to help, and subsequently became obsessed with ending the battle against Bahamut quickly. This was why he kept the Calamity Knight Job. He saw the power as a quick means to an end but wanted no one else to subject themselves to the pain that the darkness brought with it.

When Finn received Zodiark, the only known Eidolon of Darkness, he finally began to question if he was settling on the right path. The question continued to plague him after Bahamut's defeat, but his fear of another threat superseded the fear he had for himself. The Calamity slowly started to become an addiction and, once realizing this, he finally tried to stop using it so much.

When Maul arrived, claiming to be a Jedi Knight, Finn took to his teachings eagerly. Maul urged him to use the Calamity, and Finn saw his reasonings as an excuse to keep training with it. He didn't realize his mistake until after he was being controlled by Balahaka, realizing that Maul was helping the Calamity of his own free will, not to mention the revelation that Maul was actually part of the Sith.

The worst thing he ever went through, worse even than the destruction that followed, was being stripped of his name and given Darth Martis as a title of supposed honor. Outraged and inconsolable, Finn shut down until he got word of Poe being captured. With Poe, Finn had some measure of hope again which quickly died along with Maul when his friends wouldn't kill him. He had planned all along for them to kill him, but their refusal caused too much conflict. His obsession with Rey and Poe now finally came to a head, as the only way he was able to be set free was by Poe putting his life on the line to stop him.

Even after shedding the Calamity and even defeating the Cloud of Darkness, Finn still felt some amount of darkness in him. He'd become less happy and hopeful, more melancholy and prone to outbursts. But now, with the Calamity finally out of his system, he's gotten back to his normal temperament. The memories, though, will always linger.
